"This particular report, which I voted in favour of, concerns a scheme for guaranteeing deposits if a credit institution goes bankrupt. It reminds us that, when the global financial crisis broke, the EU increased the guarantee limit from EUR 20 000 to EUR 50 000 and ultimately, as of 1 January 2011, to EUR 100 000 per depositor. Nonetheless, this regulation does not offer full protection for deposits. Clearly, a run on a bank, which is an important factor given the euro crisis, could destabilise the banking system in a very short space of time. This directive aims to create a deposit guarantee system by unifying the European measures applied by Member States. This proposal is very important to Greece, given the general need to protect the Greek banking system."@en1
