"Mr President, I am pleased that the European Parliament has adopted the resolution and has again called on the Commission to support a treaty dealing with copyright on books and printed materials for blind and visually impaired people. I agree that blind and dyslexic people should be enabled as far as possible to read books and printed matter in formats accessible to them, and also to lawfully distribute such materials across borders. In my opinion, this is one of the ways in which we can extend the hitherto very restricted access of the visually impaired to publications. I therefore support a targeted exception to copyright, which should be part of an international treaty drawn up at the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). I hope this resolution contributes towards the Commission and the Council supporting a WIPO treaty on copyright on books and printed materials for blind and visually impaired people."@en1
