"Madam President, this weekend, hundreds of thousands of people all over Europe protested against the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA). These people are the present, and they are making demands of the future, and quite rightly so. They are demanding free access to information, they are demanding a free Internet and they are demanding a modern copyright law that takes into account the interests of the consumer, the public and ultimately also those of the artists. Yet what has traditional politics given them? What has it done? It has defended an antiquated and outmoded legal situation. It now threatens to impose criminal sanctions on millions of people. I would certainly not advocate that. I certainly am in solidarity with those who demonstrated at the weekend. I will definitely be voting against the agreement and I call on all of you to do the same. I am convinced that the European Parliament should take this opportunity to act as a firewall for fundamental freedoms and for a free Internet."@en1
