A main objective for us was to point out that rational and efficient waste management strategies and practices which follow the waste management hierarchy are not only necessary for the protection of human health and the environment, but also the most beneficial from the point of view of economics, raw material resource and employment policy. In this, we consider that we succeeded reasonably well. A second objective was to ensure that the report is explicit about the serious problems related to criminal activities and corruption in the field of waste management, in particular, when toxic and hazardous waste is involved, and the need to improve monitoring by the Member States in order to combat this. Taking an amendment by the rapporteur for plenary into account, the report can be considered satisfactory also in this respect."@en1
