"I firmly call on the Commission and Member States to promote greater awareness among the public about the environmental benefits of efficient waste management, notably by advising them of the importance of pre-sorting waste, of the real cost of collecting household waste, as well as of the financial gain obtained from recovering this household waste, while achieving the objectives of the road map to a resource-efficient Europe and for greenhouse gas reduction. I think that close cooperation between Member State authorities and the European Parliament’s technical committees (Petitions and Environment, Public Health and Food Safety) in dealing with the direct concerns of citizens at local level would provide an excellent opportunity to facilitate dialogue between the responsible authorities and local communities on priorities as regards the implementation of waste management strategies. This could provide, in some cases, an effective remedy when this may be useful in resolving local disputes and in taking effective measures to combat any infiltration of waste management by organised crime and against any link between organised crime and this industry or the public authorities."@en1
