The current situation is unacceptable, especially given that up to 50% of healthy, consumable food is wasted in supermarkets, restaurants and households in the EU every year, while 79 million European citizens are living below the poverty line and 16 million are receiving food from charitable organisations. We are expecting, in the future, a persuasive strategy from the European Commission, which will make EU Member States tackle this problem in a systematic way. However, in the medium term, I think that 2014 should be designated European Year against Food Waste."@en¹
