"I voted for this resolution of the European Parliament on detention conditions in the EU, which raises concerns and highlights the importance of ensuring respect for fundamental rights, particularly the right to a defence and access to a lawyer, and of guaranteeing that the rights of suspects or accused persons are upheld, including the right not to be subjected to inhumane or degrading treatment. In this context, I would stress the importance of the Commission proposal regarding the right of access to a lawyer in criminal proceedings and the right to communication upon arrest."@en1
