The European Parliament’s resolution on a Single European Transport Area is a move in the right direction. It reflects the line taken by the most important politicians in the European Union. However, I would like to draw attention to the fact that there are still considerable differences in terms of transport infrastructure between the East and West of the European Union.
We should therefore promote sustainable regional development, which entails in particular an increase in funding for less developed areas. Only this funding will result in a single transport area being created in years to come. We must remember that freight transport in Europe will increase by around 40% by 2013. Passenger transport is expected to increase by about 34%. The various forms of transport should therefore not compete with each other, but complement each another effectively. This requires more funding for rail transport in particular."@en1
