"Mr President, I would like to thank Baroness Ashton for her well-prepared statement, but I find it hard to disagree with Ms Ludford when she says that we do not discuss the issue of human rights sufficiently within the European Union itself. Unfortunately, this issue is linked to specific problems, in particular, in the case of indigenous national minorities that have inhabited certain territories for centuries. This applies not only to the Roma minority but also to other minorities. Regrettably, the current government in Lithuania does not respect the rights of indigenous national minorities. National minorities there do not have the right to use their own surnames, which is their rightful entitlement. They are also punished for using their mother tongue when dealing with public authorities, even in places where they account for over 80% of the population. Property rights regarding land seized by the Soviets are also not respected either. We ought to discuss all these matters. It is good that the High Commissioner of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) has recently paid a visit to Lithuania. I do think, however, that both the Commission and the Council should also pay serious attention to these matters."@en1
