"I voted in favour of the proposal for a directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on the right to information in criminal proceedings. Introducing common minimum standards in criminal proceedings would help ensure respect for EU citizens’ fundamental rights and help overcome the difficulties encountered in the implementation of the principle of mutual recognition in criminal matters, due to a lack of trust between the judicial authorities. The main purpose of the proposal is to affirm that suspects or defendants are entitled to be informed of their rights."@en1
