"I have nothing but praise for Parliament’s decision to mobilise the EU Solidarity Fund for the regions affected by natural disasters. The flooding that struck the Veneto region between 31 October and 2 November 2010 caused enormous damage for the population and for the entire social and economic fabric of the region. A great deal of infrastructure was seriously damaged, as well as small and medium-sized enterprises, which are the main driving force behind the economy of north-eastern Italy. The EUR 17 million that the EU is putting forward to help Veneto is a real lifeline for local citizens who are struggling – including psychologically – to overcome the memory of those dreadful days. Together with the aid being put forward for Lorca, the area of Spain hit by two violent earthquakes, the European Union is showing that it really does care about people affected by natural disasters."@en1
