lpv:spoken text	"Madam President, I have to say that, like many people in this House, I have some concerns about the general direction of our fishing agreements. I think that quite often, we have to make sure that the agreements are being made in a transparent way, and we have to think about the welfare of the local fishermen who might lose out from unfair deals. I know that in this particular case, there were some concerns about the Western Sahara people and whether their fishing rights were being sold without their being consulted properly, but in general, when we look at the fishing rights with a number of countries, from developing countries, when those fishing rights are given away without the say-so or consultation of local fishermen, what we find is that local fishermen are no longer able to compete with the industrial-sized fishing fleets that come from Europe. These people are no longer able to make a living for themselves, and when they are unable to make a living for themselves, what do they seek to do? They seek to emigrate to a better life, often to European shores. And then what do we do here in Europe? We complain. We complain about the migration from poorer countries. So let us make sure that we think these agreements through properly and let us make sure that we are not impoverishing the people of Africa and other countries, who will seek a better life in our countries."@en1
