"Mr President, I can accept a pragmatic approach to politics in certain cases, but on the other hand I would appreciate a more humane and human rights based argument in the adopted documents.
The frequently complicated administrative steps for the adoption of economic migrants must be simplified, as there are substantial differences between the various Member States at present. I welcome the fact that the Directive provides the possibility of combating the exploitation and discrimination which working immigrants are often exposed to. The draft stipulates equal treatment on the basis of a common set of rights in areas related to the labour market. Another advantage is ensuring better protection than such workers enjoy at present, on the basis of the international agreements currently in force, which have been ratified only by some Member States. Since economic migrants take part in the economic life of their host countries, they must have a legal status that protects them from exclusion and discrimination. This status will make it possible to combat the unfair competition which often follows on from an absence of legal status."@en1
