"I recommend a high degree of caution ahead of calls for greater integration in the area of customs. I am therefore delighted that the amendment on the creation of a new European customs agency was rejected. In the area of modernisation, it is important to have two-way communications and a unified approach in respect of all Member States, and not deeper integration, the transfer of powers and the creation of more supra-national institutions, as some people often assume. In order to increase business competitiveness, it is important to focus on simplifying customs procedures and standardising customs threshold values, as well as applying the ‘one-stop shop’ principle in customs procedures. We should pay particular attention to the protection of intellectual property rights and to linking this protection to customs procedures."@en1
