"I am in favour of the proposal on the modernisation of customs. Customs are fundamentally important for international trade, which is why I think we need to simplify, standardise and modernise customs legislation and procedures. The different national interpretations of the EU customs legislation create red tape for business, with a consequent negative impact on European competitiveness. Modernising customs and introducing modern and efficient IT tools must be a high political priority, bringing clear added value to EU operators and small and medium-sized enterprises in particular. An effective customs policy plays a key role in protecting intellectual property rights, combating the illegal entry of goods and counterfeit products into the single market, and therefore enhances safety and security for European consumers. I do not, however, agree with Articles 41-46 on the issue of preferential origin, because I think it is reductive to provide ‘ready-made solutions’ right now to such a sensitive and long-debated issue. The most appropriate time to discuss this issue will be the ordinary procedure, which will take place with the forthcoming Commission legislative proposal to review the customs code."@en1
