"It would be important for the association agreement between the European Union and Ukraine to be initialled before the year is out. The agreement would add a new quality to the relations between the EU and Ukraine, and can be considered an important step towards the creation of an EU-Ukraine free trade area, closer cooperation in the field of energy, and Ukrainian visa exemption.
However, Ukraine’s leadership must cease its efforts to hold Yulia Tymoshenko accountable for previous political decisions on the basis of a law that is a remnant of Soviet times and is being applied selectively. The Ukrainian judiciary must be allowed to conduct the appeal procedure under fair circumstances.
This case highlights the fact that there is much headway to be made in Ukraine with regard to strengthening the independence of the judiciary and reducing corruption. The independence of the judiciary is a fundamental value which the European Union must apply not only outside its borders but within them as well.
Efforts to convict a former Head of Government for previous economic and political decisions can occur not only in Ukraine but also in the European Union, namely in Hungary. The European Union must take firm action against politically motivated show trials within its own borders as well."@en1
