"It is entirely in the European Union’s interest to foster relations with third countries that can be beneficial to both parties in terms of political stability or even economic access. The association agreement currently being negotiated between the EU and Ukraine reflects this thinking, particularly in view of Ukraine’s geopolitical significance, its history and resources, but also goes even further. It presages a new, more ambitious kind of agreement, offering even greater opportunities, because it assumes that a significant portion of the will be implemented in the third country in question. I therefore welcome the vote on Mr Legutko’s report, which supports these negotiations while also expressly calling for the rule of law and human rights to be respected. A specific reference is made to the alarming sentence recently given to the former Prime Minister, Yulia Tymoshenko. I also particularly welcome the European Parliament’s willingness to resume the essential and effective dialogue with President Yanukovych, the calls for legal and electoral reform, and the project for improving cooperation on energy with a view to guaranteeing Europe’s security of supply."@en1
