"With the European Union’s recent enlargement, Ukraine has come to border the common area. It is a state of great geostrategic importance, not only as a possible commercial partner, but, primarily, as a guarantor of peace and security in a region where the establishment of the rule of law is not yet assured. In this context, an example to be remembered is the recent concern about fair legal process (in the matter of the detention of Yulia Tymoshenko). However, these elements should contribute not to aggravating distrust between the two areas, but, above all, to motivating EU action to support Ukraine, based on mutual recognition between the two areas. The EU can assert itself, in this context, as a true regional power in respecting human rights and defending the rule of law. To this extent, I welcome the resolution tabled and have voted in favour."@en1
