"There is no question that the European Union should maintain good relations with Ukraine, particularly in terms of economic and scientific cooperation. However, it should not be forgotten that an association agreement with Ukraine that aims for the country’s full accession to the EU in the long or short term, will doubtless also entail a deterioration in relations with Russia. Furthermore, the judgment against Ukraine’s former Prime Minister, Yulia Tymoshenko, in a political show trial has demonstrated that Ukraine still has some way to go in terms of the rule of law and democratic values. All of this leads to a climate in which it would be unwise to conclude such an agreement. For that reason, I abstained."@en1
