However, it should not be forgotten that an association agreement with Ukraine that aims for the country’s full accession to the EU in the long or short term, will doubtless also entail a deterioration in relations with Russia. Furthermore, the judgment against Ukraine’s former Prime Minister, Yulia Tymoshenko, in a political show trial has demonstrated that Ukraine still has some way to go in terms of the rule of law and democratic values. All of this leads to a climate in which it would be unwise to conclude such an agreement. For that reason, I abstained."@en1
