"I voted in favour of this report. I support, in principle, the conclusion of an EU-Ukrainian Association Agreement as soon as possible. But the report also stresses that Ukraine has first to solve the problems and issues mentioned (deterioration of rule of law, selective use of justice, human rights breaches). Ukraine is clearly part of Europe, but its sovereignty is vested in its freedom to show in a convincing way that it also wants to be part of Europe in respecting the core values of Europe – the rule of law, respect for human rights and freedom of speech. As MEPs, we also have to be aware that the people of Ukraine do not necessarily equate with the governing regime. These people deserve to be part of Europe and we need to encourage them for a closer integration with Europe. But at the end of the day, actions and real changes, not programmes or slogans, will count."@en1
