"The report under discussion relates to the European Parliament’s recommendations to the Council, the Commission and the European External Action Service (EEAS) on the negotiations concerning the European Union-Ukraine Association Agreement. The European Neighbourhood Policy makes provision for the gradual opening up of certain European Union programmes to the participation of neighbouring countries with the objective of promoting reforms, modernisation and, in many cases, democratisation within them. Ukraine’s political and state leadership has repeatedly demonstrated Ukraine’s intention, in the medium term, to join the EU, notwithstanding the fact that it was condemned by this Parliament on 11 October for the trial and sentencing of the former Prime Minister, Yulia Tymoshenko. In addition to implementing a package of public administration reforms, Ukraine has actively participated in the creation and work of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly – the platform for cooperation between the European Parliament and the national parliaments of the EU’s eastern neighbours. Furthermore, the new generation of Ukrainians have strong pro-European ambitions. Accordingly, I voted in favour of this report in the hope that it will contribute to the democratisation of Ukraine and consolidation of the rule of law."@en1
