"Regarding the vote today on World AIDS day, I wish to explain why I voted against in several RCVs on the issue of the right to abortion, phrased as ‘reproductive rights’ or ‘sexual health matters’ which is something for reasons of conscience I personally oppose when used as a contraceptive; furthermore, I regard abortion law as a matter for each sovereign country to decide in their national parliaments and in many developing countries, abortion remains illegal. Nevertheless, I have always championed the right for sufferers from HIV/AIDS to receive proper treatment everywhere and, in particular, for the international community and the EU to mobilise medical aid to countries which have poor facilities for AIDS sufferers, and for the EU to help fund antiretroviral medication and needle exchange programmes for drug addicts in the developing world. I therefore voted in favour of the resolution overall."@en1
