"The present crisis of confidence underlines the need for a clear code of conduct for Members of the European Parliament in relation to financial interests and possible conflicts of interest. Every MEP should perform his or her duties in accordance with the fundamental principles of impartiality, integrity, openness, due diligence, honesty, responsibility and maintaining Parliament’s good name. When a conflict of interest arises, the provisions of this code of conduct should provide some guidance. If the MEP is unable to resolve the conflict of interest, he is obliged to inform the President in writing. In cases of doubt, confidential advice can be sought from the Advisory Committee on the Conduct of Members. In addition, before speaking or voting in plenary or at any of Parliament’s institutions, or when proposed as rapporteur, every Member should disclose any existing or potential conflict of interest in relation to the matter under consideration. Such a disclosure can be made orally or in writing to the President during the relevant parliamentary debates. I believe that these measures make sense and will promote confidence. I therefore voted in favour of the report."@en1
