"Although the European Parliament has become a fully-fledged legislative institution under the Treaty of Lisbon, in particular, as regards establishing the EU budget, the media and voters probably talk more about our salaries, benefits and related scandals than about the work we do. It is also a fact that Members of the European Parliament are able to obtain any amount of remuneration or other income from other sources without having to declare or report it to anybody. MEPs’ salaries are several or even many times greater than those of many of their constituents, so that when we talk about reducing poverty in Europe one day and then oppose a requirement to declare additional income the next, we look hypocritical. I welcome the amendments to the Rules of Procedure introducing a requirement to declare any other paid activity and income. It is nevertheless important that these provisions are actually implemented and do not remain merely aspirational. On the other hand, I believe that we could go even further by prohibiting MEPs from receiving any additional remuneration, as is done in some Member States’ national parliaments. Surely we will not become impoverished by living solely from our salary?"@en1
