"The report states that the new Code of Conduct aims to increase transparency. Members of the European Parliament (EP) will have to submit a declaration of financial interests containing a range of information including
their employment history for the three-year period before taking up office with the EP, and their membership during that period of any boards or committees of companies, etc. Any occasional remunerated outside activity, including writing, lecturing or the provision of expert advice, must also be declared if the total remuneration exceeds EUR 5 000 in a calendar year.
We know that this report appeared following some scandals involving certain Members that have already left Parliament, hence the concerns that are now being mentioned here. For example, the Code of Conduct stipulates that Members cannot enter into ‘any agreement to act or vote in the interest of any other legal or natural that would compromise their freedom of vote’ or ‘accept or receive any direct or indirect financial benefit or other reward in exchange for influencing, or voting on, legislation, motions for a resolution, written declarations or questions tabled in Parliament or any of its committees’. We shall see how effective it is."@en1
