"I voted in favour of the report on Croatia’s application to become a member of the European Union because enlarging the EU through Croatia’s accession will help strengthen stability, freedom and prosperity in Europe. One of the EU’s objectives is to strengthen solidarity among its various peoples while respecting their history, culture and traditions. Croatia’s accession requires respect for the values on which the EU is based, as well as for the commitment to promote them. I welcome Croatia’s declaration on promoting European values in South-East Europe. The negotiations were completed on 30 June 2011, the provisions for which were agreed as being fair and appropriate. Consequently, Croatia fulfils the political criteria and we expect it to be ready to join on 1 July 2013. Croatia must continue the economic structural reforms, stimulate employment by revitalising the labour market and continue with fiscal consolidation to stimulate competitiveness. It is important that economic recovery is accompanied by environmental modernisation, including through improving energy efficiency, reinforcing policies on renewable energy sources and harmonising spatial development and energy policies. I urge Croatia to continue to strengthen the rights of workers and trade unions and to enhance social dialogue as part of the decision-making process."@en1
