"The accession of Croatia to the European Union from 1 July 2013 is the apotheosis of eight years of negotiations that deserve the utmost recognition, given the transformation of Croatia into a robust and mature democracy based on the founding values of the European Union. I hope that Croatia’s accession will act as a catalyst for reform in the Western Balkan countries. This event will enable Croatia and its citizens to take full advantage of the rights and guarantees provided for by the EU Treaties. Beyond these rights, the Croatian authorities must respect the commitments it has taken in the negotiations and encourage representatives of civil society to play a role in the entire accession process. Meanwhile, further support through the pre-accession instrument ought to facilitate adaptation to the reforms that are undertaken. However, my vote in favour of this report also serves to emphasise the need to proceed with the reforms geared towards ensuring that the magistracy is impartial and transparent on all forms of corruption and international organised crime. I would also encourage tighter cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), particularly in terms of the pursuit of war criminals and the integration of political refugees."@en1
