"I voted in favour of Croatia’s accession to the European Union as I believe that this country completely fulfils the condition for membership of the Union, starting with the Copenhagen criteria, which are now explicitly mentioned in the Treaty on European Union, in particular, with regard to democracy, human rights, an independent judiciary, good governance, protection of minorities, market economy and competition, social protection, and so on.
Following the early accession of Bulgaria and Romania, which were clearly not yet ready to do so, it has been important to ensure that new countries that join are better prepared and less swayed by political expediency. The EU has already had too many problems in trying to spare itself the difficulties of coping with the entry of new countries that do not meet the conditions necessary for full integration into all areas of European integration, such as the internal market, social Europe, the area of freedom, security and justice, and external policy."@en1
