"Illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing is a problem whose world-wide aspects have been ignored for far too long. We need comprehensive, joint measures to ensure that there is no repetition of the example of the Somali fishermen, who switched to piracy following illegal over-fishing, and who now pose a huge threat to the safety of shipping in these waters. We must also consider the negative consequences for food security and environmental protection. Illegal fishing can lead to the collapse of a fish stock or seriously impede efforts to replenish already decimated stocks. As the report correctly points out, the EU cannot put a stop to illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing on its own. A coordinated, approach on an international level supported by multinational agreements would be more sensible. For this reason, I have abstained from voting."@en1
