"With the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, to be held in Durban, only two weeks away, Parliament had a duty to send a clear message. I voted in favour of this resolution mainly because the text seeks the conclusion of a comprehensive, international, fair, ambitious and legally binding agreement post-2012. It also urges the EU to confirm its strong commitment to the Kyoto Protocol and to take all necessary steps to avoid any gap between commitment periods. We must pursue the objective of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by more than 20% by 2020. The European Union must play a leading role in this context; the future of subsequent generations depends on it."@en1
