The idea is for a European identity that complements the 27 Member States’ national identities. The purpose of what the Commission aims to do is to identify emblematic places that are part of the history of European integration. This initiative is voluntary, and, at the request of Parliament, should be carried out every two years, with the Member States’ pre-selection of the locations and the final selection to be carried out at European level.
