"The public’s distance from the European project, and demonstrations of nationalism and populism are proof that action must be taken at European level to create a sense of identification with European integration. The idea is for a European identity that complements the 27 Member States’ national identities. The purpose of what the Commission aims to do is to identify emblematic places that are part of the history of European integration. This initiative is voluntary, and, at the request of Parliament, should be carried out every two years, with the Member States’ pre-selection of the locations and the final selection to be carried out at European level. I am voting for the report, and I support the idea that Parliament should play an active role in the selection process. I agree with this type of initiative, which aims to bring European institutions closer to the European public, which is all the more important at a time when scepticism and total disbelief are growing."@en1
