".
In the wake of the economic crisis many small and medium-sized enterprises that were operating in the construction industry have had to close down in Ireland. The building trade was booming before the crisis and made a not insignificant contribution to Irish GDP; as a result of the present closures, 4 866 workers have lost their jobs within a period of months. Among those affected were 669 apprentices. The further training measures have been coordinated with the local social partners and educational institutions, and are being sensibly invested in growth areas such as environmental technology. I voted in favour because the collapse in this sector could potentially have substantial effects on other parts of Ireland’s economy, which is only now beginning to stabilise to some extent."@en1
