"Nuclear energy has been referred to as one of the energy sources that produces least carbon, but its use is always very controversial, both because of the difficulty of disposing of nuclear waste and because of safety issues. However, we also believe that it is important to carry out research in this area and that, alongside other types of research, not least into renewable energy sources, it could contribute to knowledge, and to solving and reducing the cost of, and dependence on, fossil fuels currently being experienced in many Member States of the European Union. We are concerned about a number of premises in this report, especially those that end up promoting nuclear energy when there are well-known dangers to the public and the environment resulting from issues related to the safety of the plants and reactors, to the processing and transportation of the waste resulting from this kind of energy, and to the decommissioning of facilities."@en1
