"The EU faces two demographic challenges: the ageing of its population and a low birth rate. A slowdown in the population growth rate impacts negatively on the economy and increases the risk of dependence. These trends are more pronounced in regions where the exodus of young people to attractive urban centres is more marked. The EU must find ways to manage these developments in a sustainable manner, notably through cohesion policy. As I am committed to the principle of social cohesion, which is at the heart of EU regional policy, I voted in favour of Kerstin Wetphal’s own-initiative report, which proposes that demographic change should become one of the priorities of this policy."@en1
