"Madam President, ladies and gentlemen, the dramatic financial crisis which we are experiencing has aggravated further still the situation of millions of European citizens living in poverty or in conditions of semi-poverty and marginalisation. The fight against early school leaving, easier access to European funds and better use of these funds, more attentive and efficient use of social welfare – these are just a few of the steps forward that need to be taken in order to reach the ambitious objective of reducing the number of people living in insecurity to 20 million before 2020.
For these reasons, I have voted in favour, as I am aware that only with a collective, well-coordinated effort will it be possible to reduce the number of people living in need within the European Union."@en1
