"Madam President, I will always support the right of consumers to accurate information on the products or services they wish to buy. It is possible to make responsible decisions on the basis of such information. The law must clearly guarantee every consumer the right to turn to the courts in the event of disappointment or damage. As an MEP, I have worked for many years with consumer groups, helping them to defend this right. At the same time, I am rather dismayed at the huge growth in the consumer agenda that the Commission has come forward with. We should not underestimate people’s common sense when deciding how to spend the money they have earned. We must not take this responsibility away from them. The relationship between the buyer and the seller is a relationship of trust. If this relationship is distorted, the trust and responsibility of both parties disappears. I supported the report, even though I believe that excessive regulation paradoxically increases dishonesty, both on the part of sellers and buyers."@en1
