"Madam President, the challenge stemming from the current demographic changes within the EU is one of the biggest we will face over the coming years. We must strive to develop policies which not only make the public aware of the benefits and opportunities inherent in demographic changes, but also enable older workers to fully access work and housing markets. I therefore welcome some elements of this report which recognise the unique benefits to the current demographics. In the UK, we have recently abolished the default retirement age, acknowledging, amongst other things, the benefits of an older workforce.
However, there are a number of recommendations within this report which I cannot support, most particularly those recommendations which call for a common EU strategy on migration and the diversion of Structural Funds away from building economic capacity and towards special multi-generational housing projects and undefined ‘communal events’ to integrate immigrants into their local communities."@en1
