"Poor people suffer from hunger and illness and have a shorter life expectancy. Hunger and malnutrition pose the biggest threats to public health in the world. Roughly 925 million people out of 7 billion suffer from hunger, with children being hardest hit. Poverty is a determining factor in the death of at least 5 million children every year throughout the world. Furthermore, poverty is still one of the key risk factors for diseases such as HIV/AIDS, malaria or tuberculosis. I would like to encourage projects and initiatives which are aimed at increasing life expectancy in developing countries, covering the lack of medical care in underdeveloped countries and implementing measures intended to raise the whole world’s awareness of parasitic diseases, not to mention projects aimed at granting immediate assistance to deprived families in the EU, not only assistance which may take the form of food, but also access to drinking water, clothing, housing, sanitary facilities, education and information. It is our job to do our utmost to eradicate poverty, reduce infant mortality and increase life expectancy. The European platform against poverty and social exclusion is an excellent tool for us to achieve these objectives."@en1
