"I consider the existence of an action programme/guidelines for fighting poverty and social exclusion to be extremely important, regardless of the fact that social issues primarily fall within the jurisdiction of Member States. Although the European Union is one of the wealthiest regions in the world, as a result of the economic crisis, poverty and the number of people living on the poverty line has increased significantly. Young people in the European Union are in the most difficult economic situation, and unemployment among them is the highest. In order to avoid falling below the poverty line, they are forced to choose the status of the ‘eternal student’ or live with their parents for longer. Women, whose rate of employment is 13% lower than that of men, and who earn considerably less than men, are also in a complicated situation. As a result, the income of female pensioners is lower, and their risk of falling into poverty is higher. The increase in the number of people continually living in poverty is a threat to European security. Europe needs a balanced society, and I thus strongly support this report, which aims to ensure precisely that."@en1
