"Madam President, this debate is coming to a close and I welcome the wide support of most of my fellow Members this morning – and let me thank them for it – for this report, for this multi-faceted road map, with its additional recommendations. This is important to me.
I would like to say a word about minimum income which is a sensitive issue, perhaps because it is surrounded by misunderstanding. We did draft a compromise in our report in relation to this important theme, with the specific features and living standards of each Member State. It takes the balanced view that you, Ms Lynne, have talked about. I think that it is genuinely a measure that must be supported, but with all necessary qualifications.
I am also happy with Commissioner Andor’s statements and intentions, which are in line with Parliament’s wishes, especially regarding employment, child poverty, gender equality, access to social services and, most particularly, further funding of the social cohesion funds. It is essential, Commissioner, for these intentions, for your initiatives and your concrete proposals for 2012 to be implemented.
As you said, the European Parliament must, along with the Commission, put pressure on Member States so that solidarity among our citizens becomes a reality and a priority within the Union, especially given the crisis that we are currently going through. The more united Parliament is in this struggle, the stronger the signal we shall send."@en1
