"Madam President, poverty and social exclusion must not be underestimated in the current period. I am not sure whether a platform such as the one proposed will help. I nonetheless believe that we should view the economic outlook, if at all possible, in terms of increasing poverty and greater social exclusion. This is unquestionably the result of reduced competitiveness through rigid employment legislation, high taxes on employment and an over generous social system, which de-motivates employers from offering jobs and de-motivates workers from seeking jobs. Policy must create space for people to be able to grow richer on the basis of their own abilities and their own decisions. This requires liberalisation of employment law so that, for example, women can work flexible hours for employers, or work part-time, or so that young people can find a job more easily, as their employers will not be taking too big a risk in the event that either the young person or the employer finds later that the employment relationship is unsuitable or not to their liking. The state must present a robust requalification system for people who have not had a good education, while at the same time ensuring that parents see to it that their children go to school. This applies particularly to the poorest people and to those who really need to get an education. In this context, we need to hold a very serious debate on the so-called minimum wage. Most of you here are perhaps in favour of raising the minimum wage threshold, but you can be sure that any form of codification of a high minimum wage level will mean that the most socially vulnerable and least educated people will lose the opportunity to work."@en1
