"Madam President, there is one aspect of the whole issue of poverty and social exclusion which has not yet been addressed in this debate, and that is the fact that the Member States of the European Union are importing poverty and social exclusion on a large scale.
Every year, we have hundreds of thousands of immigrants, if not more, arriving from outside the European Union. Right from the outset, a lot of these people go straight into the social security system of the Member State where they have settled. People with no job prospects, people without a chance of integration, people who are, from the start, significantly disadvantaged in terms of their language skills.
I think it is very important that Member States change course and pursue a policy of dissuasion towards potential immigrants who come to Europe and who have no prospect of finding work or becoming integrated. This large-scale importation of poverty should be stopped as soon as possible, because the absorption capacity of the Member States has been more than exceeded.
The report we are debating now rightly highlights the problem of many immigrants from outside the EU ending up in poverty. However, in order to address this problem, it is important that we pursue a restrictive immigration policy and, also, that we find other ways to invest in the countries of origin of these immigrants, so that we can stop wasting money and use it to create jobs there."@en1
