"Ukraine has been a partner of choice for the European Union for several years. However, recent events mean that Ukraine is no longer a ‘just state’ governed by the rule of law, which we find very worrying. Indeed, Yulia Tymoshenko, former Prime Minister of Ukraine, was unjustly sentenced under her country’s legal system. Similarly, Yuri Lutsenko, former Minister of the Interior, was also detained without good reason. Could that not be seen as the desire to stifle opposition? The European Union, defender of human rights, democracy and basic freedoms, cannot remain insensitive to such a situation on its doorstep, because Ukraine is well and truly a European country. Relations between Ukraine and the European Union must be based on the promotion of common values. In the interests of maintaining regular, open contact with our Ukrainian counterparts, this report rightly highlights the urgent efforts that need to be made before the December summit."@en1
