It is the second European criminal law legislation to harmonise sanctions and prison sentences for these crimes. After lengthy debates, the final text includes the principle of removing images and material relating to child pornography from the Internet, which is a much more effective method than that of blocking sites showing child abuse, as had previously been envisaged.
