Madam President, as many as 53% of Europeans believe that antibiotics kill viruses. Almost half of them believe that antibiotics can treat influenza and the common cold. They are also widely used in stockfarming. The result is the excessive use of antibiotics and the increasing resistance of bacterial strains. This problem transcends the boundaries of individual Member States and, therefore, joint European action is appropriate.
Public health is truly under threat and it was with some satisfaction that I supported this resolution, which speaks not only of a system for the monitoring of resistance and associated infections, but also of the joint development of new drugs against resistant micro-organisms. As a general practitioner I would have also welcomed better communication with an association of doctors and patients. Antibiotics should in fact only be used in cases where the doctor is sure of the diagnosis. In this very period, in which there tends to be an increase in cases of influenza, it is necessary to devote more time and financial resources to an information campaign."@en1
