"According to statistics, five per cent of women in Europe are single mothers. The EU Member States have different rules. For example, single parents bringing up children in Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom are entitled to tax relief. I believe that we should strive to harmonise the legislation in this respect, and family policy should not be sacrificed in the face of Europe’s current economic crisis and demographic problems. We should also work out compromises that will help women who are single parents to reconcile work and family life; this is why, among other reasons, I voted for Barbara Matera’s report on the situation of single mothers."@en1
