"I voted for this report, which highlights the need to respond to the problems faced by single mothers in the EU. Single mothers, whether as a result of divorce or separation, or because they have never been married, are an increasingly large group. In the EU, five per cent of women are single mothers, and the majority are between 25 and 64 years of age. Living conditions for certain categories of single mother could have consequences for their children. These children, who live on fewer resources and have fewer opportunities to access education, could be future victims of poverty and social exclusion. By performing tasks normally shared between two parents, mothers are also more exposed to stress, have less access to health care and are more vulnerable. The Member States should therefore respond to this situation and adopt public policies to support the needs of these families. I should like to draw attention to some of the measures that could be implemented, such as the adoption of the indirect subsidies policy, the guarantee of provision of medical care, the opportunity to opt for more flexible working hours, priority access to social housing, and increased child care facilities. Finally, the exchange of best practices with northern countries should be encouraged."@en1
