"Madam President, Mr Rübig, ladies and gentlemen, we have reached the nub of the problem. We can all see that there has been no progress within the framework of the WTO for years now, and that the Americans have certainly played a crucial part in that stalemate. This legislative proposal is likewise certainly no indication that the Americans are serious about opening up markets, which is what could take us all forwards. It is therefore all the more important that the Commission should finally take a new direction. What I just proposed – namely, that we should attempt to conclude a real transatlantic pact for growth and employment in order to produce a joint stimulus package for both economies on the two sides of the Atlantic – could perhaps be an approach to maybe hold back the Americans from lunacy – I am repeating myself here – and truly make a difference to the strongest economies in the world."@en1
