"Mr President, the removal of internal borders and the opportunity to travel and stay anywhere within the Schengen area for up to three months is a mainstay of the EU, and this is important for all of the citizens of Europe, whether they come from Sweden, Romania, the Netherlands or Bulgaria. Romania and Bulgaria meet all of the technical requirements and therefore they should also be permitted to participate in the Schengen cooperation. The Council’s blocking of these two States’ accession to Schengen is therefore against the rules. It is unacceptable to treat certain States one way and others another way, deviating from the rules that are in place. This then becomes a question of populism and nationalism in certain Member States.
I would like a specific answer as to what the intentions and expectations of Finland and the Netherlands actually are. Lastly, I would like to say that walls must not be built either within or outside Europe and the EU."@en1
