"Today, we voted during the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg on the motion for a resolution on the situation in Palestine. In accordance with its vote, Parliament deems the request for recognition of the State of Palestine to be legitimate, and calls on the governments of the EU Member States to adopt a common position in this regard. We also call for this recognition to be the result of negotiations within the UN General Assembly. The adopted text states that ‘the right of Palestinians to self-determination and to have their own state is unquestionable, as is the right of Israel to exist within safe borders’.
Parliament calls on the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Baroness Ashton, and on the Member States to reach a common position on Palestine’s request in order to avoid divisions, while also pointing out that the international community should confirm its commitment to guarantee the security of Israel."@en1
